Congress workers staged a protest demonstration here today demanding immediate resignation of city Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena in connection with a purported sex video and death of an engineering student.
Continuing their protest over the issue, a large number of Congress activists including workers of the party's women's wing staged a sit-in outside the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) office here shouting slogans against the Mayor.
The demonstrators also demanded a CBI investigtion into the sex clip, purportedly featuring Jena, and into the death of engineering student Asutosh Mohanty alias Rishi in May alleging that the youth had been murdered.
Claiming that the police failed to probe the matter because of pressure from the ruling party as the Mayor happened to be a General Secretary of BJD, state Congress women's wing Chief, Sasmita Behera warned that the party would intensify the stir to press for the Mayor's resignation to ensure a fair probe.
Noting that serious charges have been levelled against the Mayor, Behera said though around 15 days have elapsed since the purported sex video and its (the video's) alleged link with Rishi death case were reported, Jena continued to remain in his position.
"Investigation will be affected if he does not step down. The investigation by police is direction-less while the Chief Minister is trying to shield the Mayor," she alleged.
She said the party would continue the agitation till the Mayor tenders resignation. The Congress leaders said the case is very serious as there are allegations that the sex video had links with the murder of Rishi.
The party leader alleged Jena was being shielded by the BJD government.
