The opposition Congress in Tripura today demanded compensation for the tribal living in Chittagong Hill tract of neighbouring Bangladesh, whose properties were damaged due to ethnic clashes in the area.
A delegation of Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) led by working President Asish Saha today met Obaidur Rahaman, First Secretary of Bangladesh Visa Office here and submitted a memorandum seeking immediate redress of loss of several properties of Chakma, Tripuri and Mog communities in Chittagong Hill Tract (CHT) of that country recently.
First Secretary assured the party to forward the memorandum to the office of the Prime Minister of People's Republic of Bangladesh by tomorrow.
Tripura Pradesh Congress General Secretary and royal scion of Tripura - Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma were also part of the delegation.
More than 1,500 people from Rangamati subdivision of Khagracherri district of the hill tract gathered near barbed wire fencing on the Indo-Bangla international border at Karbuk in South Tripura district on Saturday last seeking shelter in Indian territory.
Though BSF did not allow them to cross the fencing, but provided food and drinking water on humanitarian ground.
However, they returned on Sunday when elected representatives and government officials of the country assured them of safety and security at their homes and promised to pay compensation.
"Though they were taken back from the Indo-Bangla international border with the assurance of safety and security, we have got information that the reality is something quite different," Saha said.
Congress has sought intervention of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh to ensure safety and security of all the asylum seekers. The party also demanded stringent punishment for miscreants who violated human rights there.
