Congress today demanded imposition of President's rule in Punjab contending that law and order has completely broken down in the wake of recent incident of desecration of the holy book of the Sikhs.
State PCC chief Partap Singh Bajwa said at the AICC briefing that the Centre should also constitute a time-bound inquiry headed by a Supreme Court judge to identify and bring to book the culprits in one month.
Talking to reporters along with AICC General Secretary Shakeel Ahmed, Bajwa alleged involvement of the agencies of the SAD-BJP government in the state in the incident.
"Our charge is that this act has been done at the instance of the state government. State government and the agencies of the State are involved. It is a very serious charge," he said.
Bajwa also wanted resignation of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, who is also the home minister of the state.
"Today once again the peace of Punjab is at stake. Immediately central government should intervene in the matter and President Rule should be imposed under Article 356 of the Constitution of India," he said.
Ahmed and Bajwa appealed for calm in the state. The PCC chief demanded that the families of the two protestors who died in police firing be given Rs 35 lakh as compensation and government job.
