Taking a dig at Congress-led governments at the Centre for "delaying" opening of medical institutions, like AIIMS, in states, Union Minister JP Nadda today said "when the leadership is not right, the decisions are also not correct".
"When Prime Minister Narendra Modi took over reins of the country, he decided that medical facility, like AIIMS, should be set up in states where people wanted quality medical treatment at cheap rates like they generally get in Delhi and at PGIMER in Chandigarh," he said addressing a gathering after Modi laid the foundation stone for a 750-bed AIIMS here.
Nadda informed AIIMS will be opened also at Kolkata (West Bengal), Guwahati (Assan), Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), Andhra Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Nagpur (Maharashtra).
On health projects in Punjab, Nadda said a state cancer institute will be opened at a cost of Rs 150 crore in Amritsar and an AIIMS territory cancer institute in Fazilka for Rs 45 crore.
"Seventy new medical colleges in the country will be upgraded and in Punjab seven new super-speciality departments will be set up in medical colleges at Amritsar and Patiala at a cost of Rs 190 crore," Nadda informed.
"Nobody will be affected with measles. No child will die from diarrhoea. The country is free from Tetanus in last two years and the government was taking steps to make it Pneumonia free," he said, adding in last two years four types of vaccines have been introduced.
The Minister urged the Punjab government to propose a district hospital that can be upgraded into a medical college.
