"The satra land are under the illegal occupation of encroachers who are Bangladeshis. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi must remove all those illegal encroachers from the satra lands," state BJP president Sarbananda Sonowal told reporters at the Barpeta Press Club.

He accused Congress of joining hands with principal opposition party All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).

"The Congress government along with AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal has entered into a conspiracy to fill up lower Assam with illegal migrants," Sonowal said.

He blamed the state government of not being sincere in updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and alleged that "vote bank" politics is the reason behind that.

Sonowal also accused the Congress government of violating model code of conduct in the run up to next month's panchayat polls by announcing new schemes.

Earlier in the day, the BJP leader attended a function where a number of local activists and leaders from other parties and organisations joined the saffron party.
