The Opposition Congress in Gujarat today criticised the Modi government for being silent on the immolation case, in which five members of a Nepalese family committed suicide in Rajkot Municipal Corporation's premises last week.
"Modi government's silence on the Nepalese family's suicide case has proved that it has no sensitivity towards poor people," Congress MLA Indranil Rajyaguru told reporters here today and demanded a CBI probe in the case.
Rajyaguru alleged that one of the victim's, in his dying declaration, had named a BJP leader for threatening them to evict the plot where they had been staying for over three decades.
The family was given permission to construct a small hut in the 900 sq yard plot located in Chhotu Nagar area near Raiya Dhar, but the family constructed a house there for which society members moved the civil court, which too observed that the illegal construction should be removed.
Fearing eviction, five members of the family had gone to RMC's central zone office on April 3 and committed suicide by setting themselves ablaze.
Police Commissioner H P Singh too confirmed that names of two BJP corporators were mentioned by victim Girish and police was probing their role in the case.
Meanwhile, former standing committee chairman Narendra Solanki was yesterday summoned by the district crime branch for interrogation.
