Accusing the TRS-led government of doing "injustice" to the Backward Classes (BC) in Telangana, the state Congress Sunday announced the party would provide 50 per cent reservation to BCs and Muslims in the next municipal elections.
Addressing a preparatory meeting of the party on municipal elections in Sangareddy, TPCC President Uttam Kumar Reddy said the new Municipal Act was an "insult" to the people of Telangana.
The bill passed by the Assembly Friday was against the spirit of democracy, Reddy was quoted as saying in a party release.
Reddy alleged the ruling TRS meted out "injustice" to the BCs and said the Congress would give 50 percent reservation to the BCs in the next municipal polls.
He expressed confidence that the Congress would win majority of seats in all 140 municipalities.
Earlier, AICC Telangana Inchrage R C Khuntia alleged that the new Municipal Act was "full of errors" and was "detrimental" to the interest of people of Telangana.
The Telangana Assembly had Friday passed a municipal bill, which proposes citizen-friendly initiatives such as self-assessment of property tax and tough measures including disqualification of elected members for failure to ensure survival of 85 per cent of plants under the green drive.
The Telangana Municipalities Bill, 2019 also provides for demolition of unauthorised constructions without notice and building permission through online facility for buildings coming up on an area of upto 500 sq metres with a height of the ceiling at 10 metres.
