"Devidas Sinari, a constable attached to India Reserve Batallion, committed suicide by hanging himself at Bicholim police lock-up," superintendent of police Umesh Gaonkar said.
Following which, constables Surendra Narulkar, Ramakant Sawardekar and Paresh Parab, posted at Bicholim police station, were placed under suspension pending inquiry, Gaonkar told PTI.
Devidas and his elder brother Dattaguru had been arrested after a person named Ratan Carol, a locan vendor, went missing. The two brothers had earlier threatened Carol over petty dispute.
A sub-divisional magistrate has initiated inquiry into Sinari's custodial death.
