A policeman, who was part of a minister's convoy, allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service weapon in insurgency-hit Bastar district of Chhattisgarh, an official said today.
Assistant Constable Sanjay Gupta, posted at Jagdalpur, was found lying in a pool of blood in his house in Praveer ward area on the intervening night of Sunday-Monday, Bastar Additional Superintendent of Police Surjeet Atri told PTI over phone.
He was deputed as a follow guard in the convoy of School Education Minister Kedar Kashyap in Jagdalpur, about 300 km from here, Atri said.
When his family members heard the gunshots they rushed to his room where they found Gupta bleeding from head following which they informed police, Atri said.
Gupta was immediately rushed to a local hospital where he was declared brought dead, the ASP said.
Prima facie it appears to be a case of suicide, he said, adding, a case has been registered and investigations are underway.
There was no word on possible reason behind the suicide.
