Constable Abhijeet Mazumdar was riding a bike with his friend Rana Chakravarty, a B Ed student while on their way to Dalu they were stopped at 7th Mile by about five gun-totting militants, Superintendent of Police Mukesh Singh said.
While Mazumdar received bullet injuries on his neck and back and was seen lying at nearby jungle, Rana, his friend is suspected to be abducted since his whereabouts were not known.
Today's incident came a day after an Improvised Explosive Device planted by GNLA went off at Tebronggre in the district killing two police personnel at the spot and another succumbed to his injuries in Guwahati.
Expressing regret at the loss of his men in yesterday's ambush, Meghalaya police chief P J P Hanaman said an ex-gratia payment of Rs 1 lakh has been released to the family members while another Rs 7.5 lakh will be released to the next of kin of each of the deceased cops.
