Contours of alternative alliance would emerge after 2019 poll results: Yechury

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury today said an alternative alliance could take shape only after the outcome of the 2019 polls.

He said at present the support bases of political parties differed in various states, so they would stitch up alliances at the state-level before the general elections.

"We have to wait for the situation emerging after the general elections. The character of the alternative alliance will be decided only after the outcome of polls," Yechury told reporters here.

Responding to a query on a speculation about the likelihood of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar joining the anti-NDA camp in future, Yechury said the JD(U) president was always unpredictable.

"No one can predict Nitish's next political move. It will be better if Nitish comes forward and tell us about his choice of a coalition (whether UPA, NDA or otherwise)," he said.

Terming the Narendra Modi government "anti-farmer", the veteran Left leader said the people wanted the opposition parties to dislodge the ruling dispensation in the next polls.

He also dismissed the BJP's claim that no case of corruption was reported in the last four years of the NDA rule.

Yechury criticised the Centre on absconding industrialists Vijay Mallya and Neerav Modi.

"Under previous governments, there used to be middlemen, but at present, the government itself is playing the role of middleman," he alleged.

When asked about his views about the issue of homosexuality, Yechury said, "We believe that this is not a question of morality but of legality. Whether homosexuality is a crime or not should be decided on legal grounds".
