A local court has awarded three years rigorous imprisonment (RI) to a cook for robbing a couple of valuables worth Rs 25 lakh after serving them sedative-laced food in Navi Mumbai.
Additional Sessions Judge S M Mahadik yesterday sentenced Subrato Sanyal (33), who hails from Kolkata, to three years jail term after convicting him under IPC section 328 (causing hurt by means of poison).
He was also awarded another three-year prison term under IPC section 381 (theft by servant). Both the sentences will run concurrently.
Prosecutor Hemlata Deshmukh told the court that Sanyal worked as a cook for Satyakam Raut's parents who lived in Navi Mumbai.
On the intervening night of April 30-May 1, 2013, the convict mixed tranquilisers in the food after consuming which the elderly couple fell unconscious.
When the maid came to work the next morning, she found the couple in an unconscious state, Deshmukh said.
The prosecution had said the convict stole cash, gold and silver jewellery and other valuables worth about Rs 25.14 lakh from the house .
The health of Raut's mother was deeply affected due to the sedatives, the prosecution added.
The convict was arrested in June 2013 from his home in Kolkata and the booty was recovered from there.
