"Based on a tip-off, a police team tried to intercept a truck that was heading to Neemuch district. However, its driver fired two rounds from a country-made pistol and tried to escape," Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jyoti Umath said.
"After that, police overtook and placed their vehicle before the lorry in a bid to make it stop. However, the truck driver rammed it against the police vehicle and tried to speed away," Umath said.
Assistant sub-inspector Hemant Sharma fired two rounds from his service revolver and punctured the tyre of the truck tyre bringing it to a halt, the DSP added.
"The driver escaped from the spot leaving behind the truck laden with 180 gunny bags weighing more than 32 quintals of poppy husk. The price of the contraband is Rs 32 lakh , the DSP added.
The truck driver has been booked under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and other sections of IPC, besides Arms Act and Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
