A few policemen were also injured in stone-pelting by the protesters, led by local MLA Sona Devi, a police officer said.
Gurmeet Singh, against whom a standing warrant had been issued, was arrested by the police on Wednesday and he was remanded to judicial custody by a local court yesterday.
Last evening, Singh died under suspicious circumstances after which his family members demanded action against the jail staff and policemen.
When police asked them to vacate the place, they refused and started pelting stones at policemen, injuring some of them. Police had to resort to lathicharge to remove them, the officer said.
Additional police force has been deployed in the area to maintain law and order, the officer added.
