Goa Police has begun investigations into BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi's reported tweets in which she allegedly disclosed surname of the woman journalist who has accused Tehelka founder-editor Tarun Tejpal of sexual assault last month.
The Cyber Crime Cell has written a letter to National Students Union of India's (NSUI's) Goa unit vice-president Sunil Kawathankar to provide screenshot copy or the URL of Lekhi's tweets.
Kawathankar had filed a complaint against Lekhi with the crime branch under section 228A (disclosure of identity of the victim of certain offences, etc.) of IPC.
"...Or else you should make yourself available for identifying the tweets and URL which is essential for further action," asked the letter sent by Cell's police inspector Rajesh Job.
Kawathankar had alleged that Lekhi in her tweets mentioned the surname of the victim thus identifying her which is a gross violation of law which protects the privacy of the victim.
A police spokesman said the complaint by Kawathankar was being investigated by Crime Branch with the help of cyber crime cell.
In her reply to National Commission for Women earlier this month, Lekhi denied revealing the surname of the journalist and alleged that this is an attempt to malign her.
The journalist had accused Tejpal of sexually assaulting her twice in an elevator of a starred hotel during ThinkFest event organized by the magazine earlier last month.
Tejpal was subsequently arrested and is currently lodged in Sada sub-jail under judicial custody.
