Police lobbed tear gas shells and used water cannon at AAP youth wing activists trying to enter the city today as they had planned to gherao Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal's residence demanding removal of the agriculture minister for his alleged "involvement in the pesticide scam".
A large number of AAP activists including women from several places of Punjab today assembled in Mohali to move towards Chandigarh and gherao the residence of Badal demanding removal of Agriculture Minister Tota Singh over the alleged "pesticide scam".
They were stopped from entering the city at Matour Chowk on Chandigarh-Mohali border by putting up barricades, Chandigarh Assistant Superintendent of Police (South)," Navdeep Singh Brar said.
"We told the protesters, about 700-800 in number, that they will not be allowed to enter city. But they tried to cross the barricades. Then we used water cannons and again requested them to disperse but they refused to listen. After this we used tear gas," he said, adding no one was injured in the incident.
However, Harjot Singh Bains, incharge of AAP's youth wing in Punjab said, "Several of our activists including women received injuries because of tear gas and water cannon."
Bains said, they were demanding removal of Tota Singh from his post as he was allegedly involved in "pesticide scam" because of which cotton crop got damaged by whitefly attack.
