Another man, a relative of the couple was also injured when he was hacked by the assailants, yesterday at Kumarapudukudiyiruppu near Valliyur.
A quarrel broke out when the couple had gone to attend the wedding of a girl, with whom their son had a love affair.
Later, two relatives of the girl followed them and hacked one person and opened fire at the couple with a country-made pistol, they said adding all three were admitted to a hospital late last night.
A case has been registered and a search is on for three persons, they added.
