A Delhi court has sentenced a former Superintendent of Police of CBI to four years to jail for taking a bribe from a man in return for a promise to save him in a criminal case.
Special CBI Judge Manoj Jain handed down the jail term to convict Murari Lal, who was under suspension, for accepting the bribe from Merchant Navy's former captain Rajesh Sood to show him undue favour in Noida land scam case in 1997.
"Accused Murari was in CBI for quite some time and must have thought that he could have helped Sood by illegal or corrupt means or by exercising his own personal influence. He did accept Rs five lakhs.
"It really does not matter whether he actually tried to influence anyone or not or gave any bribe to anyone or not as the offences were complete the moment he agreed to accept illegal gratification from Sood," the court said, imposing a cost of Rs 5.2 lakhs on the convict.
