Addressing a huge rally that marked the conclusion of the three-day plenum of the Kerala unit of the CPI(M), party General Secretary Prakash Karat said the Left was working to trigger a political realignment to defeat the "communal agenda" of the BJP and the Congress-led UPA which had been pushing its neo-liberal policies aggressively.
He said the Congress had lost the credibility as a party capable of combating the BJP because it had not been consistent in its secular policies.
Accusing the BJP of communalising the country to gain power, he said this was evident from the honouring of three BJP MLAs facing charges in the Muzaffarnagar riots case at a rally of Narendra Modi in Agra recently.
Lambasting the UPA government's performance in the last nine and a half years, Karat said it had set a "shameful record" of corruption in independent India.
However, both the parties were competing how best they could serve the interests of the corporates.
Karat said the process of political realignment at the national level would have its impact in Kerala also, where the CPI(M) had emerged stronger after its three day plenum which had discussed and worked out strategies to make the party fully capable of fighting the battles ahead.
The plenum, mainly called to address the organisational issues as part of strengthening the party at all levels, also discussed the prevailing situation in Kerala and decided to impart further momentum to the struggles against the UDF Government and exploit the "instability" of the ruling coalition.
