The proposed food security bill is not satisfactory and CPI(M) would seek amendments to it, party General Secretary Prakash Karat said here today.
"Our party has studied the food security bill in the ordinance. We say it is totally unsatisfactory. It will not provide food security.
"For example, according to the bill provisions, Andhra Pradesh will suffer. The coverage of people, money which will be given for the people who are to be covered, all that is going to be worse than what exists today. That is why we are going to press for amendments to the bill so that there is effective food security and maximum coverage for people who need food," he told reporters.
Karat was speaking on the sidelines of a meeting organised here to condemn the violence during West Bengal panchayat polls allegedly carried out by ruling Trinamool Congress workers.
Addressing the meeting, Karat spoke at length on the violence which allegedly targeted Left cadres.
CPI(M) polit bureau member Sitaram Yechury, who also spoke on the occasion, said this violence posed a threat to the democracy.
