Azrul Shaikh (22) was arrested and a minor youth was apprehended by the Crime Branch Sunday after the bomb they were allegedly putting together by using the explosive powder found in 'sutli bomb' in a shanty in the Antop Hill area here went off.

Shaikh was injured in the incident.

A police team has reached Shaikh's native place in West Bengal and it will investigate if he has any past criminal record or links with anti-social elements there, the police official said.

"We do not want to take any chances as the festive season is underway," he said.

Sutli bomb is a popular type of firecracker. The bomb which Shaikh and his friend had assembled was packed in a tin box and contained potassium nitrate obtained from four sutli bombs, mixed with glass shards and nails.

Both the accused are daily wage workers hailing from West Bengal, said Dilip Sawant, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection).
