A case of 'culpable homicide not amounting to murder' was today registered against a police constable and a home guard following the death of a senior citizen during a wedding in Meerpat area.
The accused pushed the victim who fell down and suffered a heart attack, as per his family's complaint.
The incident took place last night.
A police patrol van reached the spot when local residents complained of loud music playing at a wedding in Meerpat area.
Constable Khaleed and home guard Suresh (van driver) asked members of the marriage party to stop the music but they refused, police said.
But according to relatives of the deceased, Satish Kumar (62), a former fireman with the Fire Service, Khaleed and Suresh forcibly stopped the music and when questioned, one of them started assaulting members of the marriage party.
The duo pushed Satish Kumar who tried to intervene and tried to take him away in the patrolling vehicle, but fled when some of the guests chased them, the family alleged.
Some members of the marriage party then took charge of the police vehicle and drove Kumar to hospital, where he was declared to have died of heart attack, the family said.
The accused cops said there was a minor scuffle but denied that they pushed Kumar down.
Kumar was sitting far away from the spot where the scuffle took place, and when he suddenly collapsed at his seat, they tried to take him to hospital but the guests at the wedding attacked them, the two cops claimed.
Inspector N Ch Ranga Swamy said a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the IPC was registered against the two cops today.
Also, a case under IPC section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) was registered against some members of the marriage party, he said.
