"The accused, Dr Mansukh K Shah, president of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth, located at Pipaliya village on the outskirt of the city, has been detained along with two others," Assistant Director of Anti Corruption Bureau (Vadodara unit), P R Gehlot, told PTI.
Following a complaint, the ACB also conducted a raid at Shah's house and offices and found four cars collectively worth Rs one crore, documents pertaining to fixed deposits worth Rs 43 crore and 200 cheques of Rs 101 crore, he said.
"Shah sought Rs 20 lakh bribe to allow the student to appear in the ongoing examination in the college run by the university. The parents of the student met Shah a couple of days ago and told him that they had paid entire fees at the time of admission and produced the receipts," Gehlot said.
"However, Shah was adamant that unless they pay Rs 20 lakh, their daughter would not be allowed to give the exam," the official said.
Considering her future, the girl's parents deposited the amount and later approached the ACB in Gandhinagar. The sleuths came to Vadodara and nabbed a middleman.
"During the search operation, an inventory of Rs one crore was recovered from Shah's residence, which included four cars. Fixed deposits worth Rs 43 crore and 200 cheques containing an amount of Rs 101 crore were also recovered," he added.
"Shah, Sawant and Darji have been taken into custody," Gehlot said.
