An eight-year-old boy who was allegedly kidnapped by a youth to earn easy money was rescued unharmed by a Delhi Police team in Jharkhand and the accused was arrested after 72 hours of chase spread across several states.
The boy, identified as Nitin alias Neeraj, was kidnapped on February 28 from Sangam Vihar in southeast Delhi. He was rescued yesterday and Manohar Ram (26) a resident of Girdih, Jharkhand, was arrested for allegedly kidnapping him.
"Nitin's father Ashok Ram had reported to police that on February 28 at about 3 PM, his son had been kidnapped while he was playing outside the house. At about 6:30 PM on the same day, he received a ransom call on his mobile phone with the caller demanding Rs 10 lakh for the release of his child," said DCP (southeast) Mandeep Randhawa.
During investigation, the needle of suspicion pointed toward Manohar Ram, a distant relative of complainant, who had an easy access to the house of the complainant.
His antecedents were verified and it came out that Manohar Ram had recently lost his job and he was in dire need of money. Police also learnt that frequent calls of ransom were being received from the kidnapper.
Technical surveillance was mounted which showed the ransom calls were being made from Koderma, Jharkhand. On the basis of initial inputs, the possible route taken by the accused was found to be via Agra, UP; Ranchi, Jharkhand and Koderma.
Two separate police teams were dispatched to Agra and Ranchi while a third team was sent to Koderma since the location of kidnapper was continuously hovering in and around Koderma railway station, Jhumri Tallaiya, Jharkhand, police said.
"Door-to-door search in and around Koderma station, including hotels and platforms, was conducted with the help of local police of Jharkhand. Finally, yesterday morning, the police team zeroed in on the location of the kidnapper at platform No.3 of Koderma station and the accused was apprehended when he was trying to flee by train," he said.
Nitin was rescued unharmed and he and Ram were brought to Delhi, police said.
