As Delhiites came out in large numbers to vote in the assembly polls, netizens from around the globe flooded the cyber space with election related search on February 7 with the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer's website registering over 45 lakh hits.
According to the office of the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer, its website - www.Ceodelhi.Nic.In - witnessed over 45 lakh unique visitors on the polling day and close to 30 per cent of the traffic came from overseas.
"We got an overwhelming response even on our website during the elections. Total number of hits on our website on poll day (February 7) was 45,83,513, out of this 32,46,656 people accessed the website from India while we had 13,36,857 overseas users," Delhi's Chief Electoral Officer Chandra Bhushan Kumar said today.
The number of queries and searches increased to double on the counting day which crossed total hits of 84 lakh.
"The number of users on our websites swelled on counting day which reached a total of 84,25,197. As many as 60,66,142 hits came from India users while 23,59,055 accessed our website from abroad," Kumar said.
According to the statistics, over 14 lakh searches were made on electoral roll and polling details. According to the statistics furnished by the DCEO's office, Election Commission of India's website - www.Eci.Nic.In - received over 9 crore hits on the counting day. Out of the total traffic, 14 per cent of volume came from abroad.
"ECI's website received maximum foreign hits of 77.69 lakh from the USA, followed by 10.39 lakh, 9.29 lakh and 6.03 lakh hits from the UAE, Singapore and the UK respectively," Kumar said. Android-based mobile application 'Delhi Election', launched before the assembly election, was downloaded by 10,000 users.
People in large number made call on the toll free number "1950" which received 45,605 calls January 12 (announcement of date of election) to February 7 (poll day), the official said.
However, a dedicated Facebook page on Delhi Election got a lukewarm response will just 1,533 likes.
The CEO's office claims that their SMS-based monitoring system, which calculated voter turnout based on the data revived from each booth gave high accuracy data which will be soon implemented in other states.
"On the day of polling SMS based monitoring system gave a result of 67.14 per cent of total polling turnout just few minutes after the election. A day later comprehensive physical data was collected which showed result of 67.13 per cent. There was a minute difference of .01 per cent. Seeing high accuracy this system will be replicated in other states," Kumar said.
