A Delhi Congress delegation today met Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and demanded shifting of a proposed landfill site at Geeta Colony in east Delhi to somewhere else.

Delhi Congress president Ajay Maken claimed after the meeting that Baijal has accepted the demand.

"The Lt. Governor accepted our suggestion and ordered the shifting of the proposed landfill site from Geeta Colony," he claimed.

The Congress leaders said that they were protesting setting up of the landfill site at Geeta Colony as the land for it was situated close to residential areas and the Yamuna riverbed.

The LG agreed that no landfill site should be constructed in the middle of a thickly-populated area, which will not only be a serious health hazard for the residents of the area but also contribute to air pollution, Maken said.

He said that the land was meant for construction of a hospital according to the Master Plan but it was later identified for use as a landfill site.

Maken alleged that solid waste segregation norms are not followed in the capital which was reason behind problems of disposal.
