Delhi Traffic Police has rolled out handheld e-challan devices at 20 locations in the city to ease the penalty payment process for traffic violators.
"The e-payment scheme has been launched to help people pay their traffic challans. The scheme will be implemented all over Delhi in a couple of months," Senior Special Commissioner of Delhi Police, Dharmendra Kumar, said.
Normally, a violator can pay challan to the traffic police on the spot, besides depositing the penalty amount at courts and various traffic police offices. Now, the challaned drivers can pay the penalties on the spot through debit and credit cards, a senior Traffic Police officer said.
With the introduction of e-challan devices, payments are accepted through machines, which are given to around 1,200 zonal officers manning roads and major intersections in the city, he said.
Those receiving traffic challans on their addresses can also pay it through net banking, the officer said.
The first phase of e-payment scheme covers - Kalyanpuri, R K Puram, Vasant Vihar, Hauz Khas, Greater Kailash, Punjabi Bagh, Dwarka, Ashok Vihar and New Delhi traffic circles, among others.
The scheme will soon be implemented in other areas of the national capital.
The e-challan devices could not be put to use as the machines were not equipped to swap credit and debit cards. Now the devices have been improvised to make it easier to use, the officer added.
