Delhi govt accuses Haryana of patronising industries polluting Yamuna

The Delhi government today accused the Haryana government of giving political patronage to polluting industries that release ammonia in the Yamuna leading to a scarcity of potable water in the national capital.

Delhi Urban Development Minister Satyendar Jain said that the Haryana government should shut those industries that have caused the level of ammonia to increase in the Yamuna.

Yamuna is one of the main source of potable water to the residents of Delhi. Water supply in the national capital is often hit as a result of increase in the level of ammonia in the river.

In January this year, water supply was affected across Delhi due to a rise in the levels of ammonia in the river.

Jain alleged that the rise in level of ammonia in the river cannot have been possible without political patronage from the Haryana government, due to which there is a severe scarcity in Delhi.

AAP MLAs Sourabh Bharadwaj initiated a discussion in the assembly on the issue of severe water scarcity "caused due to alarming level of ammonia in water released by Haryana".

"The Haryana government should shut industries causing the rise in level of ammonia in Yamuna," Jain said, replying to the discussion.

AAP MLA Rajesh Gupta also hit out at Haryana's BJP government over the issue.
