Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia today laid the foundation stone of 318 MLD-Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), touted as Asia's "biggest and cheapest" plant, near Mukundpur area here.
"The plant will be based on 'activated sludge process' technology and will be fully automated with the facility of online monitoring of all the treated effluent parameters.
"Being the biggest plant ever built in India based on this technology, it will be sustainable in respect of power consumption," a Delhi Jal Board (DJB) official said.
Delhi Water Minister Kapil Mishra said the STP plant at Coronation Pillar is Asia's biggest and cheapest STP and will help in cleaning the Yamuna.
DJB CEO Keshav Chandra said power will be produced from the bio-gas generated from the waste to meet about 60 per cent requirement of electricity at the plant.
The total cost of this project is Rs 515 core and it is expected to be completed in 30 months, he said.
The STP at Coronation Pillar is an integral part of Sewage Master Plan-2031 of the Delhi government.
"The STP will also treat wastewater originating from unauthorised colonies and unsewered areas reaching Yamuna, hence boosting efforts of cleaning the Yamuna river," the DJB official said.
The STP is designed on advanced and modern parameters to treat water upto BOD/TSS level of 10/10, he said.
The colonies which will benefit from the plan include Shakti Nagar, Kamla Nagar, Roop Nagar, DU Campus, Nehru Nagar, Swaroop Nagar, Bhalaswa, Sant Nagar and Wazirabad Group of Colonies.
