In order to boost tourism sector in the national capital, Delhi government invited applications for the post of chairman of DTTDC in June. This initiative was a first as earlier the post was occupied by political leaders.
"We have got close to 88 applications for the top post of DTTDC and we are in the process of scanning and scrutinising them. Our objective is to revive tourism in Delhi and boost other tourism organisations in the city. We are looking for someone who can revive economy and generate employment in this sector," Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra said.
The average stay of a tourist in Delhi is very low at 1.2 days as compared to an average of 4.95 days in Bangkok, 2.7 days in Paris and 4.2 days in London. Delhi is at the bottom of the spectrum, the official said.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government is also exploring new tourism opportunities to attract more visitors so that more funds could be generated and the department is studying new tourism opportunities in the city.
Earlier, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had said that tourism is one of the top priorities of his government and had promised to develop Delhi as a tourism hub.
"It can help in checking pollution, addressing women security and employment. We are going to have tourism centric approach in all the projects," Mishra said.
