Delhi govt to sensitise councils on disputes involving elderly

Delhi government has decided to sensitise state councils, appellate tribunals, maintenance tribunals to speed up cases pertaining to property disputes of senior citizens, a senior official said today.
"Elderly people enjoy rights in the constitution of every country and any misappropriate engagement with them can result in invitation of criminal sentence from the court of law," Secretary of Social Welfare Department, government of Delhi, Sanjiv Kumar, said.
Speaking at a conference on 'Caring for Elderly' at Pragati Madian here, Kumar said it is a matter of concern that it is the family members, who neglect the elderly and and this behavior has become a security threat to the elderly.

"We will have to bring attitudinal changes in the society towards the elderly," he said.
Describing about the Department of Social Welfare, Kumar said it was running two old age homes, one at Bindapur and other at Lampur and basic facilities are provided free of cost to senior citizens there.
The Department is also providing grants to 101 Senior Citizens' Recreation Centres in order to provide facilities for relaxation and avenues of social interaction in their leisure time. The Department is also implementing Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007.
