"In 2012 and 2013, 5,284 children (2,592 boys and 2,692) and 7,235 (3,316 boys and 3,916 girls) had gone missing from Delhi, respectively. 4,454 children (2,196 boys and 2,258 girls) had returned home in 2012 and 5,458 children (2,596 boys and 2,896 girls) in 2013.
"However, 2,607 kids (8,30 boys and 1,777 girls) are yet to by traced by the Delhi Police," Minister of State for Home Mullappally Ramachandran informed Rajya Sabha in a written reply here today.
The Minister said, earlier, investigation in cases of kidnapping related to missing children was being hampered due to absence of photographs of the children. In order to tackle this problem, a 'PAHCHAAN' scheme has been launched by Delhi Police.
He also said that under the scheme, Delhi Police had collected photographs of 64,755 kids in 2012, but in 2013 it could only collect photographs of 8,788 kids.
Elaborating other steps taken by Delhi Police for the safety and security of children in the national capital, Ramachandran said that in case of a missing child, FIR is registered by Delhi Police under the head of kidnapping.
Delhi Police arrested 636 persons in 2011 in connection with kidnapping cases. In 2012, 510 persons were arrested while 597 were arrested in 2013. In January this year, Delhi Police have arrested 39 persons so far in connection with kidnapping cases, he said.
