Condemning Saturday's gang-rape and murder at Barasat in neighbouring 24 Parganas district, members of 'Nari Maitree' organisation, held placards demanding that the chief minister act immediately to ensure safety and security of women in the state.
"It is the responsibility of the CM to restore law and order in the state and ensure safety and security of women in the state," the demonstrators said.
Traffic was disrupted by a procession of women members of four Left students organisations at Esplanade later in the day.
The processionists sat down on the road after being stopped by the police.
They carried placards demanding punishment for the perpetrators and questioned 'Why state government is indifferent to atrocities on women?'
Three student representatives later submitted a memorandum to the Home department at Writers' Buildings.
"We will also submit another memorandum to the Governor," they said.
The processionists said that unless the state government improved law and order and provide proper security to women, a bigger movement would be launched.
