A bulletin issued by IMD said the low pressure over northern parts of gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas of Bihar and Jharkhand turned into a depression and lay centred over Jharkhand and adjoining northern parts of the state and Chattisgarh.
The system would move west-northwestwards and weaken gradually after 24 hours, the bulletin said and predicted rain and thunder shower at most places over Odisha.
Though there was no advice for hoisting storm warning signals in any of the ports in Odisha, the IMD warned fishermen not to venture into the sea for the next 24 hours as sea condition would remain rough to high.
Under the influence of the depression, gusty surface wind from south-westerly direction with speed reaching 50 kmph to 60 kmph and gusting to 70 kmph may prevail along and off Odisha coast, the bulletin said.
