Delhi Assembly Speaker today summoned Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) Chairman after MLAs alleged irregularity in power supply and bills in the House.
AAP MLAs raised a number of issues with regard to power sector, including irregularity in supply, tampered meters and inflated bills.
"During summer season, there is shortage of electricity and power companies demand increase in their rates claiming they are in loss. Since 2002, every year they make same claims. I demand that their working be examined," Sangam Vihar MLA Dinesh Mohaniya said.
Question the role of DERC, he said, "DERC plays an important role in power distribution but the way they have favoured power companies, raises suspicion. In the past, DERC had proposed to increase power rates raising burden on residents of the city. They also announced a bailout package for power companies to recover from their losses."
"This Assembly should examine if role of DERC is independent. It should be also ascertained if they are working for the people of Delhi or for power companies," he appealed.
Other members also supported the power irregularity issue and demanded that the DERC Chairman be summoned.
"I admit people of Delhi are troubled with whims and fancies of power companies. DERC chairman will be asked to come in next session of Assembly," Speaker Ram Niwas Goel said.
Opposition BJP also agreed to summon the DERC chief.
Earlier MLAs also sought that independent organisations to verify complaints of tampered meters.
