Stringent action would be taken against street racers, who seek their thrills in the "fast lane", The Maharastra Home Minister R R Patil said today.
"We will not tolerate the Dhoom style racing," Patil said while replying to a debate in the Legislative Assembly on law and order situation .
"The Mumbai police and traffic wing have been asked to deal sternly with this phenomenon," he said.
Patil's announcement came amid reports that traffic police have decided to seize the vehicles used in street racing, and have begun booking the offenders under Section 279 (endangering life through rash driving or riding) of the Indian Penal Code, which carries a jail term up to six months and/or a fine of Rs 1,000.
Late last year, two bikers speeding 'Dhoom' style on the Mira-Bhayandar Road rammed into a 63-year-old man, killing him on the spot.
From Marine Drive to Palm Beach Road in Vashi, there are several spots in Mumbai and neighbouring Navi Mumbai that have been turned into a nightmare for residents because of late-night racing.
Residents of Worli Seaface, Bandstand, Bandra Reclamation, the Bandra Kurla Complex, and those residing near the J J Flyover have to suffer the street racing menace almost every night. Some races begin at Girgaum Chowpatty and finish at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) at Nariman Point.
