To facilitate smooth travel for elderly and disabled passengers in Metro trains, Delhi Metro will launch a drive creating awareness among its commuters.
The special drive will be conducted on Saturdays and Sundays beginning from June 29 and will continue for a month, DMRC officials said.
The stations to be covered under this drive are Dilshad Garden, Rithala, HUDA City Centre, Jahangirpuri, Dwarka Sector 21, NOIDA City Centre and Vaishali.
Special teams comprising Customer Relations Assistants and guards will be deputed at these stations. They will ensure smooth entry and seating of senior citizens and commuters with disabilities inside the trains, the officials said.
"This special drive is being organised to raise awareness about proper utilisation of reserved seats for senior citizens and differently abled," a DMRC spokesperson said.
"Through this drive, senior citizens, commuters with disabilities and other passengers will become more aware about reserved seats inside the trains. Based on the feedback, the drive might be extended for some more time to certain other stations of the network," he said.
Presently, each six coach train has 64 seats reserved for senior citizens and commuters with disabilities. In eight coach trains, there are 88 reserved seats.
Facilities such as wheelchairs, lifts, wide AFC gates, ramps near Metro train doors are provided at all the stations for the convenience of elderly people and commuters with disabilities. Dedicated paths have also been designed for smooth entry of visually impaired commuters in trains.
The Metro staff is also provided special training to attend to such commuters. Recently, staff deputed at stations have been provided training in sign language so that they can establish communication with hearing and speaking impaired commuters.
