Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy today called on doctors to provide medical services to those living in rural areas of the Union Territory, on a voluntary basis.
He said this after inaugurating the 37th annual conference of Indian Society of Nephrology (Southern Chapter) in JIPMER here.
"While the urban population suffering from diabetes has all the medical facilities, those in the rural areas with similar complaints are going without facilities," he noted and urged the doctors to provide proper health care to the villagers.
Narayansamy said Nephrology was also an important subject which deserved to be given priority and the Puducherry government would soon open a separate block in the government general hospital to take care of patients suffering from renal ailments.
Appreciated the skill and capability of doctors, he said that generally medical professionals should refrain from proceeding to foreign countries on completion of their studies in India.
"Brain drain should never be encouraged at any cost as we should take care of our people and relieve them of their ailments," he said.
President of the International Society of Nephrology (Canada) Dr Adeera Levin who spoke on the occasion said that the society was training doctors in Nephrology from foreign countries and in the next three years a larger number of doctors would be given training by her society.
Speaker of Puducherry Assembly V Vaithilingam and the Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) R Radhakrishnan were also present.
