The Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has sanctioned two projects worth Rs 48 crore to boost tourism in Tripura, state Tourism minister Pranajit Singha Roy said today.
The funds will be used in repairing and developing two roads that connect two tourism spots - Chabimura and Tirthamuk - at Amarpur sub-division in Gomati district, about 75 kilometre from here, the minister told reporters here.
"An eight-km long road from near a lake at Fatiksagar in Amarpur town to Chabimura and a 20-km long road from Tirthamukh to Raishyabari in Dhalai district would be repaired and developed with the funds," the minister said.
Chabimura is famous for its rock carvings, dating back to the 16th century, on the hills on the bank of river Gomati.
Tirthamukh, the confluence of Raima and Sarma rivers, is considered a holy spot.
"We are trying to make Chabimura and Tirthamuk more attractive for the tourists. We will work on developing the roads, offer proper boating facility across the 14-km stretch of water body, build tourist cottages, arrange unique delicacies and more facilities for tourists," Singha Roy said.
The projects were approved at a meeting of the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme, an inter-ministerial body, in New Delhi last week, Singha Roy said.
Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb had said that his government would focus on developing tourism to boost the economy of the state.
