Doordarshan National has come up with a fresh look and 10 new prime-time shows on prevalent social issues like women empowerment and environment conservation in an attempt to restyle itself.
The channel will be seen in colours of purple and pink now.
"In keeping with out vision for providing wholesome entertainment to audiences across the length and breadth of the country with a public service responsibility, Doordarshan National has come up with a new look and feel and 10 new shows in prime time," said Doordarshan Director General Vijayalaxmi Chhabra.
Doordarshan will focus on traditional family values and its new tagline 'Doordashan National-Desh Ka Apna Channel' signifies the channel's attempt to resurrect its lost position among its viewers in the wake of competition from private entertainment channels.
Among the 10 shows launched, eight are already on air since November, including, 'Happy Homes' produced by Arun Govil, best known as Lord Ram from TV classic 'Ramayan'.
'Happy Homes' is a light comedy of unity in diversity where people from different culture, background, caste and religion live together in a colony.
'Khwabon Ke Darmiyan' highlights the struggle to bridge the gap between dreams and reality for women in changing social context. 'Khamosh Sa Afsana' is a story depicting the struggle of a daughter fighting to balance her work and manage her disabled parents. The cast includes actors like Tom Alter and Roopa Ganguly.
'Zindagi Ek Bhanwar' is a political family drama. 'Dard Ka Rishta' revolves around disregard for the senior citizens in today's society. It marks the comeback of Sushma Seth on DD after 30 years.
'Jab Jab Bahar Ayee' is a serial which touches upon the dilemma of husband and wife trying to keep their family together and finding happiness not withstanding their personal differences.
Two programmes have been brought for the weekend prime-time slots- 'Janmon ka Bandhan', a women-centric family drama, and 'Prakriti', the story of an ideal forest officer, who endeavours to save environment and wildlife.
A talk show 'Stree Shakti' will go on air on DD National later this month. The one-hour programme will feature women, who have gone through difficulties to become achievers in their own right. The show will include some well-known faces of film, music and television industry.
'Paltan', a show depicting challenging life of the armymen, will go on air from January 1, 2015.
Chhabra said that the Doordarshan team felt rejuvenated and encouraged to recreate its legacy as the government of India wants it to be the preferred channel for the viewers.
The launch of the revised version of Doordarshan National will be followed by a new channel Doordarshan Kissan after which the work will start on Doordarshan India.
