The Delhi Transport Corporation has installed CCTV cameras in 200 of its buses, as part of a pilot project to enhance security for people, especially women, while travelling.
According to the corporation, three CCTV cameras have been installed in 200 such buses each, which belonged to the Rajghat and Sarojini Nagar depots. The cameras have a capacity of recording for seven hours.
The installations come under the first phase of the project and in the second phase, more buses will be included, officials said.
"We have successfully completed the first phase of the CCTV project, which is our pilot project under which 200 buses, including low-floor AC and low-floor non-AC buses, were initially kept," DTC spokesperson R S Minhas said.
"After the completion of first phase, we will now monitor the operation of CCTV cameras and if we get to see good results, we will move towards the second phase under which more buses will be included in CCTV project," Minhas said.
He added that the project would prove useful for women passengers travelling in corporation buses, especially at late night.
The official said that two 'Control Rooms' have been set up at Rajghat Depot and Sarojini Nagar Depot where our experts are monitoring the footages of CCTV cameras on daily routine.
Besides, experts would store the footage of 15 hours in computers kept at the 'Control Rooms' situated at the depots.
After the December 16 gangrape incident, it was decided to keep a tab on public buses.
DTC had also started providing two homguards in buses operating on night services for security purposes.
