Refuting the charges by the West Bengal government of not cooperating and releasing excessive water, thereby causing flood-like situation in a few districts in the state, Damodar Valley Corporation today said water release was not in its control.
"DVC has no authority over the discharge of waters from dams. Water is only released by DVC on the specific direction of the Damodar Valley Reservoir Regulation Committee (DVRRC)," a release issued by the organisation said.
"The DVRRC is chaired by the Member (River Management) of the Central Water Commission (CWC) and comprises of representatives of the governments of West Bengal and Jharkhand, DVC and CWC," it said.
In West Bengal, west Midnapore, Hooghly, Howrah, Bankura, Burdwan and Nadia districts are affected by the release of water by DVC.
In order to minimise the impact, a modified flood warning system for timely, better and faster dissemination of information to the general public has been adopted. DVC has also agreed to increase the storage level by 5 to 10 feet at each dam, the release added.
