In an 'urgent reminder' sent to the Commission, AICC Legal Department Secretary K C Mittal claimed that despite several reminders and the poll watchdog's stand in the Delhi High Court, no notice has been sent to Modi to explain the allegations that he had spent beyond Rs 70 lakh for campaigning as a candidate from Varanasi in the Lok Sabha polls.
"It is submitted that the averments made in the petition are required to be answered by the returned candidate (wining candidate -- in this case Modi) and for further enquiry it is necessary to seek his response...Unjustifiably, till date, the matter has not been taken up by the Commission," the reminder read.
The Congress delegation also pointed out that the EC had
ordered registration of an FIR against AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi and others in connection with a delay in the road show carried out by him on February 12.
"We would also like to bring to your kind notice that the BJP has grossly misused the Central government agencies and spent thousands of crores of rupees in Uttarakhand elections through widespread use of print and electronic media, unchecked chartered flights/choppers to roam around in the state during elections and to fetch money and materials to influence voters in large scale," the Congress leaders alleged.
