EC observers arrive in Meghalaya

Election Commission observers arrived today in Meghalaya to monitor the electioneering processes for the April 9 Lok Sabha elections in the state.
"Eight general observers and two expenditure observers deputed by the Election Commission to oversee electioneering process in the state in the two Lok Sabha constituencies have arrived," Chief Election Officer P Naik told PTI.
He said most of the observers arrived and the remaining are due to arrive shortly later.
A team of three general observers and an expenditure observer arrived in Tura to oversee the electioneering process in Garo Hills region, while four general observers and an expenditure observer arrived in Shillong to oversee the electioneering processes in Khasi-Jaintia Hills region.
Forty companies of para military forces have also arrived in the state, Additional Chief Election Officer B Dhar said.
Meanwhile, eight candidates including a sitting MP have filed their nomination papers till 3 PM today, the last day for filing of nominations papers and two candidates will be contending against each other for Tura seat.
Two independent candidates filed their nomination papers today including lone woman candidate Ivory Shylla, former president of the BJP Mahila Morcha in the state.
Denis Siangshai, a coal baron from East Jaintia Hills district, filed his nomination papers today. He is the richest among the candidates contesting in Meghalaya having properties net worth of Rs 300 crore.
