"The female pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. She was named as Harbhajan Kaur, 78, of Ilford. Next of kin are aware and formal identification has taken place," said a police statement.
No arrests have been made, but the police said the incident yesterday referred to the Independent police Complains Commission as a matter of course.
"Shortly after 10:30hrs on Tuesday June 26 a City of London police motorcycle was in collision with an elderly female pedestrian. The incident happened on the A12 (main dual carriageway) near to the junction with Beehive Lane, Ilford," the statement said.
The male police motorcyclist sustained serious injuries and was taken by air ambulance to an East London hospital. He is in a serious but stable condition, the statement added.
A post mortem examination held today gave cause of death as multiple injuries. Enquires are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, it said.
