An elderly man was today killed when a pressure improvised explosive device (IED), suspected to have been planted by Naxals, went off in a village in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh, police said.
The incident took place this evening when the victim, Karko Kanna, had gone to an agriculture field for farm-related work in Kansaram village under Kistaram police station limits, Sukma Superintendent of Police Abhishek Meena told PTI.
As per preliminary information, the 70-year-old inadvertently stepped on the pressure IED whilepassing through the field on the outskirts of the village, around 500 km away from the capital, he said.
The home-made bomb went off, killing the villager on the spot, the police officer said.
On November 28, another villager Dudhi Hidma (50), hailing from the neighbouring Amapenta village, was killed in a pressure IED blast in a field near Kansaram, the SP said.
Such devices are generally planted by Maoists to target security forces who often pass through agriculture fields and dirt tracks during patrolling, the SP said.
A pressure IED gets detonated when someone steps on it.
