An elderly woman today drowned in the sea when a massive tide lashed the city shore.
The woman, believed to be in her 60s, was swept into the sea at Marine Drive while she was standing on the promenade at the time of high tide, officials of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) said.
"The elderly woman was on the promenade, watching the waves lash the shore, when she suddenly lost her balance and a strong current pulled her inside the waters before she could react," an MCGM official told PTI.
The MCGM has asked people to stay away from the waters in view of the high tides of more than 4.50 metres in height expected in the Arabian sea during this week.
According to Marine Drive police, the deceased is yet to be identified and the body has been taken to Gokuldas Tejpal (GT) hospital in South Mumbai for postmortem.
MCGM had previously said that six teams were formed to patrol sensitive areas in the metropolis during time of high tides. Each team will comprise members of fire brigade personnel, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and lifeguards.
The teams, comprising of 15 members each, have been deployed in areas like Girgaon, Dadar, Juhu, Versova, Aksa beach, Gorai beach and Chowpatty beach, where large crowds frequent the area during monsoons.
