A forest guard in charge of anti poaching operations was trampled to death by an elephant in remote Sujilkarai area in the district, officials said.
The 35-year-old man had gone deep inside the forest along with his assistant yesterday when they noticed the tusker. They tried to run away, but the pachyderm chased them, caught hold of the official and trampled him to death.
The assistant managed to escape and informed higher officials, who rushed to the spot with a doctor.
The man's body was later handed over to his relatives.
