Rajesh and Nupur Talwar broke down in the jam-packed court room when the judge pronounced them guilty of killing their teenage daughter even as media outside was at its aggressive best to cover the crucial verdict.
The proceeding was brief as Additional Sessions Judge Shyam Lal entered the court room at 3.25 PM to pronounce the verdict which was awaited with bated breath by national, regional and international media and people.
In a voice bereft of any emotion, Lal called out for Rajesh and Nupur. When both stood up, he held them guilty of murder (302 of IPC) and destruction of evidence (201 of IPC) with common intent (34 of IPC).
Hearing the verdict, which gave first conclusion on the killers of five-and-a-half year old mystery, the couple broke down for a brief moment before regaining their composure.
They were seen in an animated discussion for nearly 15 minutes with their lawyers who consoled them and assured them of filing appeal in the high court.
In the meantime, emotional family members including parents of Nupur also joined in consoling them.
The women constables who were to take Nupur to Dasna prison here asked her to hand over valuables including the wrist watch to relatives.
While the proceedings were going on in the special CBI court room located on a small campus separated from the main court by a strictly guarded boundary wall by police, journalists and camerapersons swarmed outside the compound.
The security arrangements were so tight that sometimes even friends of Talwars were not allowed to enter the compound. Media persons, barred from entering the court compound, reacted to every bit of information from inside with great excitement.
