Protesting against 'ransacking' of property in the centrally sponsored JIPMER and threats to doctors by some people after the death of a boy last week over alleged deficiency in treatment, faculty and nurses today demanded that a law be enacted in the Union Territory, as in other states, to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
Some "unscrupulous elements" had ransacked properties of the hospital and threatened health workers following the death of a youth, admitted for treatment for a snake bite on April 14, President of the Faculty Association of JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research) R Raveendran and General Secretary of Resident Doctors Association B Arun said in a joint release.
The hospital maintained that utmost care was taken to save the youth and there was absolutely no negligence on their part.
The Associations demanded that the Puducherry government immediately bring forward a special legislation on the lines of that in other states to protect them and the properties of the institution.
